Crab Racing

On Friday night a good chunk of the AGSM-ers braved the pouring rain to gather at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel for a night of Crab Racing.

This is just what it sounds like. A guy comes with his bucket of Australian hermit crabs and officiates a series of races. During each heat 7 competitors step up to a table and pick their crab. All crabs start in the middle of the table. You cheer like crazy for your crab and the first one to get to an edge of the table wins. Of course, some crabs don't actually realize that they're in a race and can't be bothered to move at all. This may not seem all that awesome, but it's actually really fun to watch the little guys scuttle!

As with most games, it's even more fun when you actually win, and Day took the first race! Prize money totals about $30 -- buy in is only $4. My little guy made a good showing, but ultimately he came in second in my heat. It was a good round though -- and actually an almost all girl race.

Shradha, in the middle, won the heat. Carla, on the right, and I first met on the wine trip and we started talking because we dressed exactly the same -- the girl has taste. ;-)

It was really fun night. Before the crab racing, a group of us went out to grab dinner in Darling Harbour. We ended up at a place called the Blackbird Cafe that serves your standard casual fare -- mostly pizza, burgers, pastas -- but they also had some decently priced cocktails. I also liked that they had the complete rhyme on one wall.

I may have potentially found some other newbie surfer buddies to go out with, so I hope that works out. Either way it was just nice to get out for some drinks and silly screaming with a crowd. Actually, the next day I woke up without a voice, so maybe there was too little too much yelling.
